Harper’s large purchases



During the present election campaign, Harper and his Conservatives have attempted to position themselves as saviors of the economy. Far from being a savior, Harper’s economics is nothing short of “depression-style economics”.

 

 

Consider the matter of government procurement: When government buys something within the country, it spends taxes and this spending creates jobs. Big-ticket items, like military purchases, infrastructure and so on, have the power to do this.

Gichner waits for defense contracts



The late passage of a federal defense budget has the top executive at York County’s Gichner Shelter Systems, a defense contractor, dispelling rumors while preparing for an influx of work.

 

 

President Tom Mills said rumors were circulating that the plants would close, probably as a result of confusion and uncertainty about the federal budget.

Retired Naval lieutenant commander sentenced to prison in bribery scheme



A Navy lieutenant commander, passed over for promotion, came up with another idea to add to his income.

 

At a welcoming barbecue at Camp Taji in Iraq in the spring of 2007, Frankie Hand Jr. of Chesapeake struck up a conversation with a woman.

 

 

The woman, Michelle Adams, told Hand she was a private contractor looking for work. She also said her boyfriend and business partner, Peter Dunn, was currently in Panama, where the couple based their company.
