The U.S. Air Force’s fifth Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS-5) satellite headed into space late May 24 aboard a rocket launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.The satellite lifted off at 8:27 p.m. Eastern Time aboard a Delta IV launch vehicle made by United Launch Alliance. Less than an hour later, controllers in Australia confirmed initial contact with WGS-5, indicating that it is functioning normally and ready to be moved into orbit about 22,000 miles above Earth, said Boeing, which built the satellite.
