This year Lincoln commemorates the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln and David Starkey’s talk will explore the theme of Decisive Battles by examining another momentous military confrontation that shaped the course of English history, the 1485 Battle of Bosworth Field.

The infamous battle, when King Richard III was killed and the rebel earl of Richmond crowned Henry VII, ended the Wars of the Roses and the centuries-long reign of the Plantagenets. Like the Battle of Lincoln two centuries earlier, it is considered one of the most significant moments in English history.

Lincoln Book Festival Trust chairman Phil Hamlyn Williams said: „Lincoln Book Festival has a proud record of bringing the biggest names in history writing and historical fiction to our wonderful city and we’re delighted to announce David Starkey will be returning as the first headline speaker confirmed for the 2017 festival.

The theme of decisive battles fits wonderfully with the commemorations marking 800 years of the Battle of Lincoln and we are sure our audiences will greatly enjoy his analysis of how pivotal battles like Bosworth have determined the winners and losers of English history.

David Starkey CBE is a well-known TV and radio personality, and the author of many books including Elizabeth; Six Wives: The Queens of Henry VIII and Monarchy: England and Her Rulers from the Tudors to the Windsors.

Lincoln Book Festival 2017 takes place from September 25 to 30 at venues across Lincoln.

This year’s festival will be inviting visitors to Go Gothic by celebrating the Gothic in all its glory. From the genre-defining literature of Walpole, Shelley and the Brontës, to the real histories of medieval valour, conflict and intrigue that inspired them, through to modern day phenomena such as the Twilight saga and the Steampunk movement, Gothic continues to inspire and excite readers of all ages today with its heady mix of mystery, horror, magic and romance.

The full Lincoln Book Festival 2017 programme will be published this summer. For the latest, visit.

Tickets for David Starkey’s appearance are priced from £16 and go on sale June 5 via the Lincoln Drill Hall box office by calling 01522 873894.
