Globecomm Introduces Lightweight Transport 1.2 Meter Multi Band Auto-Acquisition Terminal

Globecomm Systems Inc., a leading global provider of communications solutions and services, today announced the launch of its next generation Auto-Explorer™ 1.2 Meter Multi Band Lightweight Transport (LT) Terminal. This new satellite communications terminal utilizes integrated carbon fiber technology and reduced components weight, making it a lightweight alternative to Globecomm’s existing 1.2 Meter Auto-Explorer™ terminal.

The LT is fully IATA compliant for checked airline baggage. It offers a three transport case solution – each case weighing less than 70 pounds. The versatile, auto-aligning VSAT antenna uses band-specific feed cartridges with integrated RF electronics to enable quick and simple frequency conversion in the field from X to Ku to Ka satellite bands, and supports several OEM L-band modem products from Comtech, iDirect, Hughes and Viasat.

Available in single, dual or tri-band configurations, it supports voice, fax, data, video, Internet and LAN-to-LAN connections. Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) certification of this new terminal is in process and scheduled for completion by December 31, 2011.

Michael Plourde, Vice President Government Programs for Globecomm, said: “The new Auto-Explorer ™ 1.2 Meter Multi Band LT terminal offers mission-adaptable communications in an IATA transport configuration. This terminal product packs out in less weight than our existing 0.77m Auto Explorer ™ system, with much improved system performance. Simply put… more bandwidth throughput with less weight to carry. Our LT design combines high data throughput with easier mobility for the warfighter and represents a significant addition to Globecomm’s product line of portable terminals.”

ViaSat-1 Named Winner in Telecommunications Category for TechAmerica Foundation American Technology Awards

ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq:VSAT) has been named the winner in the Telecommunications category for the American Technology Awards, which bestows the only “Best Of” awards recognizing all technology products and services for the technology industry. ViaSat won the award for the innovative design of its high-capacity satellite system, featuring the ViaSat-1 satellite. Nominations were vetted by industry experts and technology companies. Known as “The Termans,” these awards are named after Frederick Terman, who is widely credited as being the father of Silicon Valley.

“We’d like to thank the panel of experts for recognizing the true potential of our new satellite architecture to transform the performance of satellite communications and lift our industry to a more competitive position in telecommunications,” said Mark Dankberg, chairman and CEO of ViaSat. “I’d also like to congratulate our CTO Mark Miller, the chief architect of the system, and all the ViaSat employees who’ve contributed to its development.”

The winners were announced on June 15 at TechAmerica Foundation’s ninth annual Technology and Government Dinner, which gathered hundreds of industry, congressional, and government leaders to celebrate the partnership between industry and government.

“We had a lot of nominations for these prestigious awards, and we congratulate ViaSat for its winning achievement, as it continues to influence technology development throughout the world,” said Senator Bob Bennett, chairman for TechAmerica Foundation.

The American Technology Awards were presented for each of following segments of the technology industry: Aerospace and Defense; Clean Tech/Green Tech/Smart Grid; Cloud Computing/Software as a Service; Computers and Peripherals; Consumer Electronics; Cyber Security and Authentication; Electronic Components; Internet Services; Measurement and Control Instruments; Medical Devices; Server & Storage Technology; Software; Technology Consulting; Technology Services; and Telecommunications. Nynex Chooses Newtec FlexACM(R) Technology for Satellite Trunking to Middle East and Central Asia

Leading VSAT system integrator Nynex has installed Newtec’s FlexACM® technology to provide new coverage for the Middle East and Central Asia region. Nynex’s new services are a replacement for costly and unreliable existing fibre connections to the area. By using Newtec’s FlexACM technology with inclined orbit satellites, Nynex is able to deliver robust connectivity at a significantly lower cost with unparalleled availability.

Using a combination of Newtec’s Elevation ACM Shaper and Encapsulators (EL860), Elevation IP Satellite Modulators (EL170), and Elevation IP Satellite Modems (EL470), Nynex is running three transponders on Eutelsat W48, 48 degrees east to deliver Internet trunking for high-speed Internet in Iraq and Afghanistan via Wimax and 3G networks. The Newtec equipment is installed at the IABG teleport in Ottobrunn, Germany, and in remote locations in the Middle East.

Nynex’s service provides connectivity to local civilian and military users at competitive rates, and with previously unattainable service availability.
“By combining Nynex’ Monitoring and Control System, the advantage of an inclined satellite and the high performance of Newtec’s Elevation technology with the robustness of Newtec’s FlexACM solution, we can now easily deliver 100 Mbit rates, much better service availability and a more appropriate solution to our customers in the region,” says Andreas Buxbaum, Managing Director, Nynex. “We are already working on an extension of this service for Africa as an alternative solution to the very expensive and unreliable fibre optics Internet backbone there.”

Newtec’s award-winning FlexACM combines a range of cutting edge technologies for implementing Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), traffic shaping, payload compression and IP acceleration in a highly efficient way. The integrated unique patent-pending Noise and Distortion Estimator (NoDE) provides accurate monitoring of the satellite link quality and enables optimum usage of satellite transponders. In addition to an average doubling of the capacity of an existing link, FlexACM guarantees the highest level of link availability even during bad weather conditions, making it ideal to use on Ku-band and Ka-band links. Using FlexACM on inclined satellites enables Nynex to use the satellite capacity to its maximum at all times as FlexACM automatically adapts the link parameters to the available satellite power level.
“With this installation, Nynex has made a significant improvement to the Internet service available in the region,” says Serge Van Herck, CEO of Newtec. “The FlexACM technology is a key factor in facilitating the expansion of reliable connectivity at costeffective rates, particularly in conditions that are subject to heavy rain attenuation or other regular link degradations.”

Newtec’s Elevation IP modems are designed for the efficient transmission of IP over satellite at rates from 512 Kbps to 160 Mbps in full compliance with DVB-S2 standard (including 16APSK and 32APSK), and support a wide range of encapsulation protocols, such as MPE, ULE, GSE and XPE. They can be used in point-to-point or oint-to-multipoint architecture in one-way configurations with terrestrial return channels or two-way configurations with return channel over satellite.

FlexACM is available across Newtec’s Elevation product family, which consists of DVBS2 IP satellite modulators, demodulators, modems and satellite IP appliances.
