Taser unveils multi-shot stun gun

Relevance Score: 1.482    2009-07-28 22:29:09

Manufacturers of the Taser stun gun on Monday unveiled a new handheld weapon on Monday which is capable of shocking three people without having to reload. Arizona-based Taser International said in a statement the company's new X3 "electronic control device" was the first new handheld weapon since 2003 and featured enhanced safety details.     Taser International chief executive Rick Smith said the new multi-shot Taser would "increase officer safety through the ability to recover from a missed shot or even simultaneously stop up to three separate targets."   The company said the new weapon included a "pulse calibration system" for allowing electricity to be distributed across the outer layers of the skin of the target rather than deep into the body. A video demonstration of YouTube showed three volunteers  being floored by three successive shots before getting to their feet apparently unhurt.   Human rights activists have criticized Taser stun guns, challenging manufacturer claims that they are safe and non-lethal.   A December 2008 report from Amnesty International said 334 people had died after being shocked by Tasers between 2001 and August last year.

Russia tests world’s most powerful vacuum bomb

Relevance Score: 1.472    2009-05-21 11:53:26

The world’s most powerful vacuum bomb has been tested by the russians. The bomb unleashes a destructive shockwave with the power of a nuclear blast.   The bomb is the latest in a series of new Russian weapons and policy moves as President Vladimir Putin tries to reassert Moscow’s role on the international stage. The defence ministry stresses this military invention does not contradict a single international treaty. Russia is not unleashing a new arms race Such devices generally detonate in two stages. First a small blast disperses a main load of explosive material into a cloud, which then either spontaneously ignites in air or is set off by a second charge.   This explosion generates a pressure wave that reaches much further than that from a conventional explosive. The consumption of gases in the blast also generates a partial vacuum that can compound damage and injuries caused by the explosion itself

RTI International wins $70M contract to train Army soldiers to fix Abrams tanks

Relevance Score: 1.387    2009-07-18 13:29:26

RTI International has secured a $70 million contract to develop virtual-reality simulations that will train Army soldiers on how to repair the Abrams line of tanks, the Research Triangle Park-based nonprofit giant announced Wednesday.   RTI will develop software and other technology that will allow soldiers to practice making repairs to the tanks. Soldiers will be able to go through the training while working on desktop computers.   The simulation technology developed by RTI will be integrated into a suite of devices known as the Abrams Maintenance Training System. RTI’s contract is with the U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation in Orlando, Fla.   “RTI's approach to this requirement reflects the latest advances in desktop simulations using serious games technology as well as an unprecedented degree of integration with other members of the Abrams community,” said Sam Field, vice president of RTI's training business. “For years, RTI has pioneered the application of virtual reality on low-cost desktops as a means of providing learning-by-doing in a cost-effective and safe environment. These new Abrams products will feature new technologies and everything we know about learning methods.”   RTI will use subcontractors for much of the work on the Abrams project. Anniston Army Depot in Alabama will work with RTI in using demilitarized tank parts to make the simulations as realistic as possible. Other subcontractors on the project include DEI Services Corp. and TJ Inc. of Orlando and DRS Test and Energy Management of Huntsville, Ala.   With more than 2,800 employees worldwide, RTI International is one of the world’s largest research organizations.
