HPI Fleet & Mobility, Europe’s leading independent fleet manager, has one primary objective: bringing people from one place to another in the simplest, most convenient ways possible. In its ongoing effort to blaze new trails in this field, the company is using this year’s European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) to look for innovative ideas for seamless, sustainable mobility concepts that incorporate new technologies.
Oberpfaffenhofen, 15 May 2012: Whether it’s with privately owned or hired cars; public services such as buses, trains, and planes; bicycles or our own two feet – we use myriad means of transportation every day to get where we need to go. Finding the best combination of these options can, however, still be a complicated affair. Considerations of sustainability and the increasing amount of traffic in inner cities are also leading to the need for new mobility concepts. For these reasons, HPI Fleet & Mobility is offering a prize in the area of seamless and sustainable mobility in its search for innovative solutions that use satellite navigation to simplify and improve personal mobility.
“We want to provide our customers with door-to-door mobility that’s both sustainable and fun,” says Steffen Giebler, CEO of HPI Fleet & Mobility GmbH. “With modern smartphones and other mobile, navigation-ready communication devices offering so much potential for the future of mobile management, the ESNC is a fantastic opportunity for us to seek out ideas for innovative applications.”
Ideas for door-to-door navigation applications that integrate different means of transport, service concepts for optimised travel planning, and other sustainable mobility concepts will all have the chance to catch HPI’s eye. Submissions will be evaluated with a particular focus on sustainability and market potential. In addition to a EUR 10,000 cash prize, HPI Fleet & Mobility will provide proactive support designed to help the winner to implement and commercialise their idea.
Ideas can be entered for the Seamless and Sustainable Mobility Prize at www.galileo-masters.eu until 30 June.

About the European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC)
The ESNC is an international ideas competition that recognises the best ideas in the field of satellite navigation every year. From companies and research institutes to students and other independent individuals, anyone is free to enter. The only thing that matters is your idea! You will be able to submit your innovations at www.galileo-masters.eu from 1 April to 30 June.
The ESNC was inaugurated in three regions in 2004 under the patronage of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. Since then, the competition has transformed into a network that embodies innovation and expertise. The new partner regions in this year’s competition are Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, Ireland, Poland, and Portugal, bringing the total to more than 20 regions now competing for the distinction of having produced the overall winner – the Galileo Master. Leading international satellite market research and consulting firm NSR has identified that government and defence markets need to anticipate increased data, video and voice rates over satellite. This echoes in satellite communications specialist Newtec’s award-winning technology FlexACM®.
NSR’s report highlights a trend in the US, now being seen worldwide, of a rapidly increasing demand for communications over satellite. This is driven by the increasing numbers and video plus data traffic by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and manned aircrafts, as well as advances in fixed government communications and national security technologies.
Jose Del Rosario, Senior Analyst, NSR, commented: “Cost considerations in the time of expected budget tightening coupled with tremendous pressure to offer creative solutions to address complex mission requirements for data and video should lead to tighter commercial partnerships over the long term. The commercial opportunity for the government/defence should grow at healthy levels. From $3.2 billion in 2009, NSR forecasts revenues to reach $9.2 billion at the end of 2019 with a representative Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10.9%.”
Newtec has identified these needs and translated them in the FlexACM technology. Newtec’s FlexACM solution is an advanced technology that provides auto-optimisation of satellite capacity through a one-stop, end-to-end solution for IP backbone and IP trunking networks. The solution utilises advanced technologies – Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), Noise and Distortion Eliminator (NoDE), cross-layer-optimization and the Thin Margin Manager (ThiMM). All can be used individually to optimize the satellite link.
However, when combined, FlexACM helps government and defence customers to get the very most out of the bandwidth available to them, doubling on average the throughput and pushing down operational costs. Whist in operation the satellite link remains available at all times to ensure mission critical communications. FlexACM has been deployed on platforms supporting UAVs and manned aircrafts; as well as government fixed communications; Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), intelligence through Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) satellite communication equipment.
Newtec’s Strategic Marketing Director of Government Solutions, Koen Willems, said: “The increasing requirement for satellite capacity in the government and defence market has been conspicuous. With applications and services in the market becoming more and more data hungry, efficiency is becoming increasingly important to keeping costs down whilst ensuring reliable and stable services.
“Efficiency is at the core of Newtec’s FlexACM technology embedded in satcom modem hardware and satellite network optimisation, which is critical to ensure future capacity availability.”
Newtec has a track record of installations worldwide for a wide range of government, defence and commercial applications. Over the years, Newtec has built an outstanding reputation for its quality and reliable satcom equipment and support.
The latest government and defence solutions from Newtec will be on display at MILIPOL Paris 18 – 21 Oct, MILCOM 2011 in Baltimore 7 – 10 Nov, and at the Global MilSatCom in London on 29 Nov – 01 Dec.
Newtec will also be hosting two special webinars on government satellite networks to be held on 13 December at 6pm CET and 14 December at 9am CET. To register visit www.newtec.eu/government-webinar.

For more than 15 years, leaders in San Antonio aerospace have said the key to building a long-term prosperous sector here is to bring in more work from the commercial sectors — airline and air freight aircraft.

Contracts for military aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul won’t last forever, they said. The day of reckoning is drawing close
