Soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq are being offered an Internet service primarily aimed at companies in Asia. The new service offers high-speed Internet access with out the need for phone lines, cable or dial-up modem. TS2 Satellite Technologies company is using satellites to power their Internet service. For soldiers deployed to the war zones this service can allow for communications back home. Many of the soldiers arrive in Afghanistan and Iraq with their own lap top hoping to stay in contact with loved ones. The troops can connect with the service when they are in their barracks. Not everyone though in the service is just using the Internet to stay close with family some are using it to blog and stay in touch with their business associates in the US. Having that connect with family and those at home have upped the morale of the troops.

Hughes Network Systems, a major player in broadband satellite networks and services, reportedly has expanded the provision of high-speed satellite Internet access for U.S. troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Hughes is proud to provide high-speed Internet service to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, reinforcing the military's Morale, Welfare & Recreation [MWR] efforts in the region," said Rick Lober, vice president and general manager of Hughes Defense and Intelligence Systems Division, in the release. Lober said staying connected with spouses, children, extended family, and friends is essential for the troops' morale, especially as they often are deployed overseas for a year or more. "Hughes has been providing broadband satellite terminals throughout the region since 2003, and the additional bandwidth and resources from our new Dubai-based hub now enables us to connect even more men and women of the military with their loved ones at home while they serve our country overseas," said Payam Herischi, senior director of Hughes Global Services. The high-speed satellite Internet service is available at U.S. military bases in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait, with local installation and logistics support provided by partner companies in the region.

Since the military provides just 6 to 12 computers for every 1,000 or so troops, time limits of 10 to 15 minutes per day are often enforced at Morale Welfare Recreation Cafés (the complicated name for military internet cafés). Anyone who sorts through spam, reads forwarded articles and jokes, then tries to respond to “real” email knows 15 minutes isn't enough. Josh Hines, a soldier from Conway who recently returned from Iraq , confirmed that the Army lacks internet services and lamented the scarcity of entertainment options. It should come as no surprise, then, that some enterprising military personnel have engineered an alternative. TS2, the common term for troop-owned ISPs, have sprung to life on almost every base around Iraq. A typical TS2 network is built and maintained by one or two soldiers and can provide nearly 24-hour internet access (until the region is stabilized and electrical lines can be installed, generators must occasionally be powered down for maintenance). Most TS2 networks are small, serving between 20 and 30 troops, but ISPs serving as many as 300 are known to exist. In a country wracked by war, where even the capital city receives only intermittent electricity, where people's lives are in constant peril, and where even basic necessities are scarce, this is no small victory. A TS2's key elements are satellite service from an international provider, a satellite dish to send and receive data, and a central location inside a base where network hardware is safe from attack. Like an internet-age Frankenstein, a TS2's hardware must be purchased from an international source, shipped in, then cobbled together by military personnel, many of whom have little previous experience running a network. The discovery of GhostNet, the cyber spying network that spanned across 103, countries was a threshold event in the new age of cyber warfare and espionage. Can you even imagine if something like this would happen to a physical spy network where real human spies are involved? With all the investigations, work and publicity, we still do not have any idea of how significant the damage is from this new age spying. We do know that GhostNet clearly shows just how unprepared many are to defend their secrets. Foreign embassies located in the United States are considered sovereign property and part of the country they represent. That makes the servers and computers that were housed and used inside those foreign embassies also property of that government. The hacking and attacks against those computer assets could be considered to be hostile acts against the government itself. But consider this, the Internet communications cables that connect the embassies housed inside the United States are our property. Is it a U.S. crime to use those cables to steal information, electronically look and listen in via a web cam and computer microphone? The question everyone has to answer is -- where did the crime of espionage actually occur? The internet has blurred borders and questions of jurisdiction have been around as long as the Internet itself. Given the implications of cyber spying -- lawmakers need to figure this one out and quick.

Soldiers throughout the world are beginning to enjoy a new wireless Internet service, and Soldiers at U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg will be no exception. Through the Army Recreation Machine Program, the Family Morale and Welfare Recreation Command is providing Soldiers with a unique Wi-Fi service. The project has been developing stateside for almost two years, but it's only just branched out to overseas installations. The project, which began at Fort Benning and Fort Gordon in 2007, was designed to give Soldiers an Internet service that was not only affordable, but flexible. The provider gives customers a chance to subscribe by the hour, week, or month, allowing Soldiers to work around training or deployments. For those who are changing duty stations they need not worry about setting up a new account. Once an account is made, it can be used at any facility worldwide, as long as they have this wireless infrastructure. This wireless network is not only giving Soldiers Internet access, but it's giving them better quality. On Warner Barracks, the contractors are focusing on empty barracks; their goal is to have them prepared for redeploying Soldiers. After all the barracks are completed, recreation centers will be next in line to get connected. The Birchview Lanes Bowling Center is already enjoying this service, but the Community Activity Center, Moonlight Cabin, and Freedom Fitness Center will soon follow. The Library is also scheduled to receive this Wi-Fi service from Aptilo Networks, but no account will be needed for access at this location. The Community Activity Center already provides free Wi-Fi paid for by MWR.
