Despite some cutbacks, U.S. Navy shipbuilding programs are on track, and feature a wealth of shipboard electronics new projects, systems upgrades, and technology insertion.

The U.S. Navy in the last week of 2010 awarded contracts to industry teams led by Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics to build one Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) with options for nine more over the next five years, as well as technical data packages and support services. Total value of the Lockheed Martin award is $491.9 million; the General Dynamics team contract is for $465.4 million.

Lockheed Martin won a $139.6 million contract to provide 44 combat-proven High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to the U.S. Army.

This order will increase the Army’s HIMARS launcher fleet to 375, with deliveries continuing through January 2013. Work on the contract will be performed at the company’s facilities in Camden, Ark., and Grand Prairie, Texas.

Military helicopter avionics engineers at the Lockheed Martin Corp. Mission Systems and Sensors segment in Owego, N.Y., are readying to upgrade the U.S. Navy MH-60R Sea Hawk maritime helicopter with advanced situational awareness technology under terms of a $35 million contract announced Monday by Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Md.

Lockheed Martin avionics experts are performing pre-engineering, manufacturing, and development in support of the Situational Awareness Technology Insertion (SATI) for the MH-60R helicopter.
