US Marine to get 6 years for Iraq contracts fraud



WASHINGTON — A US Marine captain was sentenced to six years in federal prison for conspiring with his wife to skim nearly $1.7 million from government contracts in Iraq.

 

 

Eric Schmidt, who still serves with the First Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, California, pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and filing a false tax return that hid the illicit income from his scheme.

Regime change in Egypt could comlicate defense contracts



The departure from power of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Friday could put as much as $30 million worth of local defense contract work for the country under review, executives and experts said.

 

 

Management at metro Detroit defense contractors watched closely last week as Mubarak first transferred some powers to Vice President Omar Suleiman, but then left Cairo with his family and later resigned his post.

The Czech Defence Ministry bought overpriced radar that the army neither needed nor wanted



Prague, Feb 12 (CTK) – The Czech Defence Ministry repeatedly bought overpriced equipment that the army neither needed nor wanted, daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) writes Saturday, citing the results of an audit of the ministry’s arms acquisitions in the past years.

 

 

In 2000, the ministry bought the Komar radar for 67 million crowns though it knew that the military can hardly use it.
