China Lifts Off Rocket With A Spy Satellite.

Relevance Score: 2.179    2009-12-10 14:58:06

It is relatively probable that a Chinese military reconnaissance satellite lifted off from a desert launch pad on a Long March rocket on Wednesday, state media informed.   The Long March 2D rocket blasted off at 0842 GMT (3:42 a.m. EST), or during the afternoon at the Jiuquan launching base near the border of northern China's Inner Mongolia and Gansu provinces.   The 135-foot-tall booster's two stages, fueled by hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide, guided the Yaogan 7 payload into a sun-synchronous orbit about 400 miles high, according to public tracking data.   Yaogan 7 was manufactured by the China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., according to Xinhua.   Wednesday's launch was revealed to public information less than a day in advance, typical publicity for Chinese military launches.

First interactive showroom allows visitors to 'touch the green'

Relevance Score: 2.097    2009-05-03 11:34:13

In order to keep up with the savvy, techno-minded youth of today, we have opened our first interactive 'showroom' in London, where members of the public are invited to step off the street and into our world. Known as a Contact Point, this showroom in the Kingsland shopping centre Dalston, London, aims to make the Army a little more accessible in terms of what is involved in Army life.   With a battlefield simulator, a virtual range using laser-powered rifles and a selection of informative films profiling real operatives within the organisation, the showroom is geared as much towards education as it is recruiting.   And, the centre doesn't focus solely on the combative aspect of military life as both 'shop floor' and 'back office' careers are highlighted.   Exciting and innovative environment Colonel Paul Meldon, the commander of regional recruiting for London, commented: "The Army plans to use the Contact Points to start talking to society and the communities in a fresh way that allows the public to find out about their Army in an exciting and innovative environment.   "No question will be avoided and the full range of Army activities will be on show so that the public can "touch the green" in a way that has never been tried before."   Staffed by serving soldiers and stocked with the same simulators our soldiers use in their training, it is hoped that Londoners will add touching base with a soldier to their 'to do' list next time they head to Dalston.   Another centre will open shortly afterwards in Hounslow, West London. If the Contact Points are successful in London, then it is hoped that similar centres will open across the country.

USAG Baden-Wuerttemberg reaches out through virtual community

Relevance Score: 1.749    2009-06-11 08:54:26

U.S. Army Garrison Baden-Württemberg is using social networking to reach out to its community members, who are spread out between three garrisons in Germany.   The BWnow command information program contains a variety of online photo and information sites, with the latest addition being the BWnow virtual community, which operates much like Facebook or MySpace but is solely focused on the Baden-Württemberg communities.   The BWnow virtual community, which can be found at http://myBWnow.ning.com, supports the Heidelberg, Kaiserslautern and Mannheim military communities with a place to read and post blogs, ask discussion questions of the community, share photos, make friends, form groups, and find out about events happening on and off post with the searchable event database.   "Living overseas can be really challenging, so this site offers an opportunity to connect with others you may not know personally but who have the same types of challenges and experiences as you," said Kelli Bland, USAG Baden-Württemberg public affairs specialist and creator of the virtual community.   The site also has video capabilities, which the USAG Baden-Württemberg Public Affairs Office is using to help promote the site. "The Reel Life: Heidelberg" video contest is being hosted in conjunction with the garrison's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Marketing team to encourage community members to check out the site and to get involved in the community by showing off their favorite local activities.   Whoever makes the winning video will earn himself a new Samsung NV40 digital camera. The winner will be announced at the Heidelberg Fourth of July celebration on Patrick Henry Village - and the community decides who takes home the prize.   "We thought this was a great opportunity for PAO and FMWR to team up and get the community excited about their favorite part of living overseas," said Kristen Marquez, USAG Baden-Württemberg public affairs specialist in charge of the contest. "People can show pride in their community activities and services and learn about our great new virtual community at the same time."   The BWnow virtual community began in February and has more than 320 members.

Studying social impacts of emerging military technology

Relevance Score: 1.719    2009-07-26 21:00:39

Brad Allenby, a professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, has been selected to be a Stockdale Fellow for the U. S. Naval Academy Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership.   The year-long Stockdale Fellowship program brings together scholars and teachers with senior career military officers, civil servants and others to collaborate on strengthening public understanding in areas involving war, military and leadership ethics.   Allenby will investigate the social, cultural, ethical and operational implications of emerging military and national security technologies.   The result of these investigations will be published articles, lectures, and detailed research on emerging technologies and their implications.   “Many people don't understand how important military conflict has always been to the development of new technology,” Allenby says.   He points to such technological advances as the rapidly increasing use of robots in combat situations, miniaturized surveillance mechanisms, development of “telepathic” headgear, and smart drugs that enhance cognitive function.   The Stockdale Fellowship “offers an opportunity to explore the implications of such technologies so that we can manage their effects on society rationally and ethically,” Allenby says.   Candidates for an academic Stockdale Fellowship typically are established scholars who have achieved considerable publications of their work and have gained significant teaching experience in the areas of philosophy and ethics, international relations, behavioral science, and/or public policy.

New Bioweapon Detector Showcased.

Relevance Score: 1.699    2009-11-25 21:23:55

Universal Detection Technology has demonstrated its latest development in bioweapon technology at the 2009 Milipol Conference, a five-agent biodetection handheld assay.   "There are bio-weapon monitoring tools immediately available for public and private entities, easy to implement and cost effective," Jacques Tizabi, CEO of Universal Detection Technology, informed. "Universal Detection Technology's biodetection kits are the first step in meeting the needs of bioterrorism prevention and planning."   UNDT, which develops early-warning monitoring technologies to protect against bioterrorism and other infectious health threats, showcased its TS-10-5 biodetector, which boasts no setup time, no decontamination requirements and no false negatives or false positives.   Earlier this year, UNDT's biodetection kits were certified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as an "Approved Product for Homeland Security." The kits are currently the only hand-held assay designed to both detect and identify up to five separate threats with only one sample.   The kits deliver first responders with an effective tool for rapid onsite detection for anthrax, ricin, botulinum toxin, plague and Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B. Detection time by the kits takes less than three minutes.   "Bio-weapon detection should be a top priority for all public entities, because for terrorists, [bio-weapons] can be purchased or engineered at relatively low costs, can induce mass casualties and are oftentimes undetected by on-the-ground law enforcement," Tizabi informed.

Public Hearing On SPVM Stun Gun Use

Relevance Score: 1.658    2010-04-08 16:33:44

A Taser is an electroshock weapon that uses electrical current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles. Its producer, Taser International, calls the effects “neuromuscular incapacitation” and the devices' mechanism “Electro-Muscular Disruption (EMD) technology”.   The public security committee, headed by Verdun mayor Claude Trudel, will present City Council a statistic report and recommendations regarding the electric discharge gun. At this moment there are only 16 Tasers for SPVM special trained officers. The gun is employed as a less lethal weapon only when a suspect is belligerent, violent or insensitive to pain as a result of alcohol and/or drug affection. The “Taser CAM” is a specialized device accessory designed for the police used model to record audio and video when the Taser's safety is disengaged. The CAM is integrated into a battery pack and does not interfere with the Taser's existing function.   Since 2003, at least 17 Canadians have died in connection with police Taser incidents. In fall 2007, two people deceased in a week time interval. Robert Dziekanski, a Polish resident, was stunned at Vancouver International Airport, B.C. The officers repeatedly used a Taser to subdue 40 year-old and then pinned him down for several minutes just before he passed away. A few days later, Quilem Registre, age 39, died of liver and heart failure at the hospital, after Montreal Police had stopped him for erratic driving. Registre had rammed his car into several other vehicles and became aggressive during questioning. Officers stunned him five times in under a minute. Cocaine and alcohol was found in the victim`s bloodstream.

Defense Media Activity

Science has seized the popular imagination. There are magazines, popular books, Web sites, webcasts, blogs, documentary films, and even television channels devoted to science and technology.   The practical applications of science and technology also can be found in almost every aspect of military operations, a topic that is discussed in great detail in the award-winning weekly webcast "Armed with Science: Research and Applications for the Modern Military," informed by the Defense Media Activity.   The popularity of the Armed with Science webcast in its first year has prompted the Defense Media Activity to expand its on-line presence. A new Armed with Science blog, premiered in late January. The new blog includes articles, archived webcast episodes, transcripts, images, and videos.   "Expanding into the blogosphere will allow us to develop a dialogue between our listeners and the scientists, engineers, operators and administrators who are involved in DoD science," informed Brian Natwick, general manager of The Pentagon Channel and acting director of DoD’s Emerging Media Directorate. The new blog will provide a better forum to highlight the critical role of science and technology in military operations, Natwick said, while demonstrating how research conducted to meet military requirements often benefits society as a whole.   Les Benito, director of the Defense Media Activity’s Public Web Directorate, said the blog also will deliver an opportunity to experiment with emerging social technologies and implement strategies that better engage the public. It will bolster a social media portfolio that already includes efforts on Twitter, Facebook, and BlogTalkRadio.   "We hope to develop a more user-centric and interactive Web site that evolves over time to meet the needs of our audience," Benito informed. "Consider this is an experiment in progress."   John Ohab, a new technology strategist at the Defense Media Activity’s Public Web Directorate and host of the weekly webcast, said the blog will place specific emphasis on the men and women who are involved in research, development, and education at the Defense Department. By focusing on their individual stories, Ohab hopes the blog will help break down traditional myths about science and technology that hinder some people from pursuing related careers.   "Science isn't just for scientists," Ohab informed. "Not only does science and technology help make our servicemembers safer and more effective, they also impact virtually everything we do in civilian life."
